Quick answer: The hamster gestation period is about 16 days for a Syrian hamster and 18 to 22 days for dwarf species. That makes it one of the shortest pregnancies of any pet. A chinchilla carries for about 111 days by comparison. The calculator above uses Syrian timing, and the table below covers the dwarf species.
Hamster gestation period: how long are hamsters pregnant?
A Syrian (golden) hamster is pregnant for about 16 days, and 15 to 18 days is normal. Dwarf hamsters carry a few days longer.
| Species | Typical pregnancy | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Syrian (golden) | About 16 days | The most common pet hamster |
| Winter white dwarf | About 18–21 days | Can breed again right after birth |
| Campbell’s dwarf | About 18–21 days | Hybrids with winter whites are common |
| Chinese | About 20–21 days | Longer, thinner body and tail |
| Roborovski | About 20–22 days | The most variable; some run longer |
If you own a dwarf hamster, add 2 to 5 days to the date the calculator gives you, or use the dwarf column in the table at the bottom of this page.

How can you tell if a hamster is pregnant?
For most of the pregnancy, you cannot. A hamster gives few clues until the last week. In a Syrian hamster, look for these signs from about day 10:
- Her hips widen, and her body turns pear-shaped from above.
- Her nipples swell and stand out. This means birth is only a few days away.
- She hoards more food and builds a bigger nest.
Nesting and hoarding are normal hamster habits, so they mean little on their own. Dwarf species, especially Roborovskis, hide pregnancy even better. Weighing her every couple of days on a kitchen scale is the most reliable home check.
How to get the cage ready
Do this a few days before her due date, because you should not clean the cage for about two weeks after the birth:
- Give the cage a full clean around day 13 of a Syrian pregnancy.
- Add plenty of soft, unscented bedding and nesting material.
- Take out the wheel, tubes, ramps and upper levels, so newborn pups cannot fall or get stuck.
- Move the male out. Dwarf females can become pregnant again right after giving birth.
- Offer a little extra protein, such as a bit of plain cooked egg or chicken.
What happens when a hamster gives birth?
Most hamsters give birth at night, alone in the nest. A normal litter has 6 to 8 pups. They are born pink and hairless, with closed eyes and ears.
See a vet at once if she strains with no pup, bleeds heavily, cries out, or her belly stays swollen after the birth. A pup may be stuck.
Why you should leave the nest alone
A stressed mother may abandon or even eat her pups. This is the biggest risk in the first week, especially with a first litter.
- Do not touch, move or peek at the pups for at least 7 days.
- Only open the cage to top up food and water. A towel over one side of the cage helps her feel hidden.
- Keep the room quiet and keep other pets away.

How do hamster pups grow?
| Age | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Day 0 | Pink, hairless, eyes and ears closed |
| About day 7 | Fur starting to show; gentle handling can begin |
| About day 10 | Pups nibble soft food; place it where they can reach |
| About days 14–18 | Eyes open in Syrian pups (sooner in dwarfs) |
| Days 21–28 | Weaning; split males and females by 4 weeks |
Young hamsters mature fast. Separate brothers and sisters by 4 weeks old to stop surprise litters. Plan a vet check for the pups at about one month.

Frequently asked questions
How quickly do hamsters have babies after mating?
In about 16 days for a Syrian hamster and about 3 weeks for dwarf species. That is faster than almost any other pet.
How many times can a hamster give birth in a year?
In theory, many times, because some females can get pregnant again right after a birth. Back-to-back litters wear her down, though. Keep the male away and give her a long rest between litters.
At what age can hamsters breed?
Hamsters breed best between about 10 weeks and 15 months old. They can become fertile younger than that, which is why litters should be split by sex by 4 weeks.
Can I hold the babies?
Wait about a week before gentle handling, and wait until the eyes are open before you clean the cage. Disturbing the nest too early is the main cause of a mother harming her litter.
What animal has the shortest pregnancy?
Among mammals, the opossum, at about 12 days. Hamsters are close behind. A ferret carries for about 6 weeks, and a guinea pig carries for about 68 days.
Do hamsters have a false pregnancy?
Yes. A female can act pregnant after a mating that did not take, with nesting and hoarding but no pups. If no pups arrive by about day 22, she was most likely not pregnant.
