Quick answer: Most cats have 4 or 5 kittens in a litter. A study of over 1,000 pedigree litters found an average of 4.6, with a range of 1 to 13. Breed makes a big difference: Asian and Burmese cats average about 6, while Persians and Birmans average under 4.

How many kittens can a cat have in one litter?
A cat can have 1 to more than 10 kittens, but 4 or 5 is normal. The largest study of cat litters looked at 1,056 litters from 14 pedigree breeds. The average was 4.6 kittens, and the smallest and largest litters had 1 and 13.
Ordinary house cats and strays seem to have slightly smaller litters. In one study of a mixed-breed cat colony, the average was 3.7 kittens, with no litter above 5.
Which cat breeds have the most kittens?
Oriental-type breeds have the biggest litters. In the pedigree study, Asian cats averaged 6.5 kittens, Burmese 5.7 and Tonkinese 5.3. The smallest litters came from Birman and Somali cats at 3.6, Persians at 3.8 and Abyssinians at 3.9.

| Breed | Average litter |
|---|---|
| Asian | 6.5 kittens |
| Burmese | 5.7 kittens |
| Tonkinese | 5.3 kittens |
| All 14 breeds | 4.6 kittens |
| Abyssinian | 3.9 kittens |
| Persian | 3.8 kittens |
| Birman and Somali | 3.6 kittens |
These are averages, so a Persian with 6 kittens or a Burmese with 2 is still within normal.
Does a cat’s age or first litter change the number?
Not much. In the pedigree study, the mother’s age and how many litters she had before made no clear difference to litter size. That goes against the common belief that a first litter is always small.
Her health still matters. A cat who is a healthy weight and well-fed before and during pregnancy is better placed to carry and raise her kittens. Our guide to how long cats are pregnant covers care through each stage.
What is the most kittens a cat has ever had?
The record is 19 kittens in one litter, born to a Burmese and Siamese cross in England in 1970. Four of them were stillborn, so 15 were born alive. A litter that size is extremely rare and stretches the mother’s milk supply.
How can you tell how many kittens she will have?
An X-ray is the reliable way. Skulls and spines start to show from about 6 weeks, and an X-ray after about day 55 gives the best count. Ultrasound confirms pregnancy earlier but often miscounts. Belly size tells you very little.

A count is useful on the day of birth. If the X-ray showed 5 kittens and 4 have arrived, you know one is still to come. See how to tell if a cat is pregnant for the early signs before a vet visit.
Do bigger litters change the pregnancy?
Slightly. In the pedigree study, each extra kitten shortened the pregnancy by about a tenth of a day. So a cat with 7 kittens may give birth a little sooner than a cat with 2. The difference is small, and most cats still give birth 64 to 66 days after mating.
The cat labor signs guide shows what birth looks like and when to call the vet.
How many litters can a cat have in a year?
An unspayed cat can have two or three litters a year. Cats can come back into heat a few weeks after giving birth, even while nursing. That is why spaying, or keeping her indoors and away from toms, is the only sure way to prevent the next litter. Our cat heat cycle guide explains the timing.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for a cat to have only one kitten?
Yes, it happens, though it is less common. A single kitten can grow large, so tell your vet if an X-ray shows only one. They may want to check her near the due date.
Do first-time mother cats have smaller litters?
Not reliably. A study of over 1,000 pedigree litters found her litter number made no clear difference. Breed has a much bigger effect.
How many kittens usually survive?
Most do. In the pedigree study, about 7 in every 100 kittens were stillborn. Watching that every kitten nurses in the first hours helps catch weak ones early.
Do mixed-breed cats have more kittens than pedigree cats?
No, if anything they have slightly fewer. A mixed-breed colony study found an average of 3.7 kittens, compared with 4.6 across pedigree breeds.
Can a cat have 10 kittens?
Yes, but it is rare. Litters of 10 or more turn up mainly in large-litter breeds such as Asian and Burmese cats. The record is 19 kittens.
Can I tell the litter size from how big her belly is?
No. Her build, weight and how far along she is all change how big she looks. Only an X-ray, best done after about day 55, gives a true count.
